Marvel Comics has had many unique replacement heroes – but they once tried to bring back a classic hero with an ape version of himself! Yes, really.
Comic books are full of stories where the main hero gets replaced by a different character. Superman was once replaced by four “Supermen” after he died at the hands of Doomsday. Spider-Man once had his body taken over by Doctor Octopus who became the Superior Spider-Man. And Captain America has had many successors, from Bucky Barnes to Sam Wilson, who’ve filled in as the Star-Spangled Avenger.
In most cases, these replacement attempts are temporary and the original hero eventually comes back to reclaim his or her mantle. Because of this, however, some comic book creators like playing with this trope by introducing some truly outrageous ideas – like the time they replaced Marvel superhero Robbie Baldwin (aka Speedball) with a chimpanzee!
