The world’s most popular instant messaging platform, WhatsApp, offers the ability to switch phone numbers without losing chat history. It is helpful when someone has to get a new phone number either because they are moving to another country or switching service providers. The ability to change numbers has long been a WhatsApp feature, and doing so will migrate the user’s account info, groups, and settings to the new number while retaining all existing chats.
The process described below is valid only when changing the number on the same phone and not when switching to a new phone altogether. For the latter, users will need to backup their chat history on Google Drive or iCloud and then restore the chats from that backup once their account is up and running on the new phone. However, simply changing the phone number on the same phone is much easier, and it can be done from WhatsApp settings on both Android and iOS.
